View Full Version : Help me name my landscape design business

I am thinking about doing some landscape design work after I finish the course I'm taking (in landscape design, naturally enough), and I would like a very cool name for my business. I plan to specialize on low-maintenance, low water use designs, so it would be super if that were incorporated as part of my business name.

My forerunners so far are Laurel Leaf Landscape Design and Huntington Landscape Design (I live in the Huntington area, and I think it has a nice ring to it). I wanted to call my business Threshold Landscape Design, but it just doesn't seem to work. So, any suggestions from all you smart, talented, creative people?

"Carefree Landscape Design" - C.L.D. doesn't give you a bad company initial, which is alwaysimportant. This is more a descriptive name without a negative mental image.

"Laurel Leaf Landscape Design" - L.L.L.D. The name is good, it makes me picture green things with no negative associations. It's not descriptive, but it gives me a positive good feeling. You can always add "Specializing in" under the company name, which is probably a good thing in the long run. You can change the "specializing in" part, without losing your name recognition, later if you need to shift with the market demands.

"Huntington Landscape Design" I would keep away from the name as it would send people searching the internet, to medical pages about Huntington's, and I'll bet a number of local companies start with the same name.

The name is meant to catch and reel in clients at a glance, so you should blank your mind, and say the name. What's your first impression at hearing the name? You shouldn't have to think about a company name to get what they do. Example "Arid Designs" is bad in that I associate the name imediately with lots of baren inhospitable landscape, which isn't the way to get someone to pick you over another name randomly.

Too bad about the connection with women's sanitary products. :D

Plus, it has a built-in logo idea.

Hmm, hadn't thought of the Huntington's disease connection. That's why I pay you guys the big bucks. :D

There used to be one over here called : Fences and Hedges (sounds like a certain brand of ciggies).

If you want more of a water retriculation focus, how about: Colonial Irrigation

It is a good idea to keep the name descriptive:

I have no idea but make it something good.

I was watching a movie with my son recently and the credit for the visual effects was Giant Killer Robots. My son remarked that obviously one of the advantages of starting your own business is that you can give it a cool name.

"Imagine," he said, "someone asks where you work and you can say, "Giant Killer Robots dude, Giant Killer Robots.'"

I could see his point.

There's a company here in town called Explosives, Inc. How cool would it be to be able to say you work there? Of course, there are also B.J. Services and the former P.M.S. Hobbycraft. Not as cool. But yes, I do want to make it good, not some uber-cutesy, schlocky name that I'll regret in a year.

Slartibartfast? That might be the most ingenious suggestion yet. Colonial Irrigation is also good. If I started a company specializing in irrigation systems, I think I would have to go with that one.

Thanks!

Say, does anyone know any earth-goddess-type names other than Gaia? I wouldn't mind a name like that, but anything with Gaia in it is too granola for my taste.

elelle
02-02-2006, 12:55 AM
I hear ya with that granola peeviness, and Gaia gets overused in the lingo sense, unfortunately Not in the understanding sense of underlying cognition.

I'll put your query on the backburner of my lil mind; work with plants every day in the nursery biz, mebbe a nice one will pop up!

Suggestion: Think about your favorite plants, look at the botanical Latin name: some nice juxtaposition might happen there.

That's a good idea - Syringa Landscape Design? Sorbus Landscape Design? Hippophae Landscape Design? Very interesting.

SmartYards - I do like that, but I'm not sure it isn't too high-tech sounding. It sounds like I would be designing automated yards (which would also be cool).

Wild Things, eh? Hmmm.

Update - I think I've decided to go with Laurel Leaf Landscape Design - Specializing in Low Maintenance Yards. It just seems to strike a chord with me.

Next step is to sweet talk the artistic Dopers here and see if anyone wants to have a go at designing a logo for me (I do yards, not logos. :D )

Update, Part II - changed my mind. Still looking. In case anyone cares. :) I would really like to call it Chrysalis - Landscape Design and Consultation, with a very nice stylized butterfly in the logo, but I see that we already have a business in Calgary with the same name - Chrysalis, An Alberta Society for Citizen With Disabilities. I don't know how good an idea it is to use a name that is already associated with a completely different field.
