View Full Version : Your Gender, Height, & Shoe Size?

elfkin477

Through observation I have formulated a hypothesis, but I'd like to collect more data. So...

a. what is your gender?
b. what is your average shoe size? (to avoid ranges like 8 in some shoes, 9 in others.)
c. how tall are you?

My own answers are a. female b. 7.5 c. almost 5'4"

Ironically, the last time I found shoes in my size where I actually had a choice as to the style was in Puerto Rico which based on my short stay there, does not seem biased towards the larger-feeted segments of society.

I reckon that the OP's hypothesis is essentially a version of "people like to talk about themselves". Give people any excuse, such as an ostensible poll of height vs. shoe size or whatever, and they cannot resist the opportunity to tell everybody about their own height and their own shoe size, and you get a three page thread.

Good grief, is every other male doper a giant? Being a perfectly normal and respectable height of 5'7" myself, I have to wonder how you oversized people manage. ;)
Hmm... Maybe that was part of the hypothesis, something to do with the average height and shoe size of intelligent people, and we seemed like a good sample base.

10 1/2 "B" (narrow) or for a really good fit the harder to find 11 "A" (extra narrow)

I'll add that you also rarely see the extremes in widths available outside of special order. The vast majority of shoes are medium width (which I though was B, I've never seen C or D tho' I do occasionally see E and A).

Other shoe sizes: A US 9 is a UK 6 and I've noticed that lots of UK shoe sellers don't seem to have half size. People in England must walk around with ill fitting shoes.
There are actually two different European shoe sizes: French and Italian. Italian is much more common and even most French shoe makers use the Italian sizing. An Italian 39 is closest to a US 8.5 although most department stores try to claim it's a US 9. The French sizing is about a size smaller, a US 9 would probably be a French 40 but honestly, you rarely see French sizing nowdays.
BTW, the above is for women's shoes; I dont' know much about men's.

Oh, and I'll add that the most commonly stocked shoe sizes in the US are 6 - 10. There's a reason for that, those sizes are made using the same last (the form the shoe is shaped on). Sizes smaller that 6 and larger than 10 use a different last and are more expensive and more difficult to locate.

I meant to add this but I missed the edit window. My old job had my hanging out in NBA dressing rooms and one day the Miami Heat came to town. Shaq wasn't in the room at the time but his shoes were sitting at his locker. They were massive, comically large even, and you really have to see them to believe them (I didn't actually check out the sizes - seemed rude - but Google tells me they are somewhere in the neighborhood of 22 - 24 EEE).

I still can't believe how big those darn things were.

This was what I wanted to test:
In my observation thus far, women's feet size has seemed much more closely related to their height then men's. The only women I've ever met with big feet have also been very tall for women, but on the other hand I've met several short men with big feet. So I want to see if this might be test-able.

I haven't figured out a way to sort the data yet to see if this bears out, but a couple people have begged for the hypothosis, so there you have it.

Easiest test is to partition the data by gender and compute the correlation coefficient for each data set. If they're significantly different, you're on to something.
