Okay, that may be a slight hyperbole. Maybe not a million, but at perhaps a free dinner or lunch if they're ever in the area? Hahah, I'm serious because this song has been stuck in my mind for MONTHS, yet I don't know:

1. Who sings it.
2. The name of it.
3. Any other lines other than one line (which is basically just one word repeating).

I have sang this one line, in tune, to many of my friends and relatives (both in real life and over the phone) and NOBODY has ever heard of it or even the tune...which makes me believe they just don't listen to that genre of music.

But anyway, even though I only know one line and the tune...I would know it if I heard it again. So, over the months, many internet friends have been linking me to songs and it's always the same: I listen to it for a bit and go "Nope, that's not it."

Okay, enough with the introduction. Now for the song info and what I know about it. I must warn you, though, it's NOT much. However, I do know these things about it:

1. First off, the line that I know is very simple: "I said hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey!.....hey, hey, hey, hey....I said hey, hey, hey, hey.. *lower octive* I said hey, hey, hey, hey....."

This may or may not be spot on. It could be different variations that start it like "I said now, hey, hey, hey, hey" or "Now hey, hey, hey, hey" But the "hey hey"s remain the same.

2. I know it's a song that has only been out recently. Like, in the last 6 years, I'd guess. IT'S POSSIBLE it could be older than that, but I don't think so.

3. The "hey, hey" part/line is either part of the chorus of the song or THE chorus of it, period.

4. The song is a rock song and it's got the SOUND like it's sung by one of those popular groups like Matchbox 20, Creed, Nickleback, Pearl Jam, Bush, Collective Soul....although it might not be one of those groups. The sound is like theirs, though...the sort of throaty sound that most of the lead singers of those groups have. It's also sung by a guy.

5. If anyone would like to call me so I can sing the "hey, hey"s in tune, PM me and I'll give you my number. The "hey, hey"s are very distinctive sounding so it might help if someone could hear how they're sung.

6. A song I know it's not: That one by that girl that sings "So I wake in the morning and I step outside and I take a deep breath and I get real high, etc". I know it's not that one..I've heard that one many times, trust me. It's not that one. Like I said, this is sung by a guy. Probably a guy in a group...again, it has that sound, however it MIGHT just be a solo guy.

I can't really tell you much more than that. I don't know any more. But again, I would know it if I heard it, so feel free to link me to millions of songs in here to listen to and I'll tell you if it's that or not. The person who can find it will get...I don't know...something, though. Like me paying for your charter membership for a year or two. :) And my ever gracious apprecation.

"I said?/I said now?/Now?...hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, heyy.......hey, hey, hey, hey, hey....hey, hey, hey, hey.....*lower sung* I said?/Now? hey, hey, hey, hey...."

Please, help me, straightdope. Can YOU figure out what song this is? I know, it's a challenge....but surely the SDMB can eventually find the answer? Man, I'm hoping.

I think this song was used in a commercial (maybe a car commercial?) sometime in the last few years. Could be where the OP heard it, if it's the right song.

Not it. The one I'm trying to find is:

1. A much more recent song.
2. A much more slower song. :)

Yeah, it's slower. Not as many intstruments. I think there is a guitar and maybe drums and that's it.

Steve winwood, new orleans?

Just listened to it. That's not it either.

It's not Rio or Swamp, either. It's not that old of a song...it's come out in the last five or six years, I'd say. It's not by a band that was around in the 80s or 90s, I don't think. This is a song by a popular band or artist (I'm guessing) that is popular TODAY (like Simple Plan or Yellowcard or Jack Johnson) It's not going to be a band like Simple Minds or Van Halen or Stevie Windwood.

It sounds like a lot of those current bands sound like, like I said...kinda like the sound of Matchbox 20 or Nickleback or Bush or Incubus or Hinder. A real recent sound.

Trust me, I've been looking for this song for months...I'm starting to think nobody knows it and it's impossible to find knowing only what I know, heh.

It's DEFINITELY not Weird Al. :) Although I did listen to it anyway and I knew, immediately, it wasn't it.

Again, it's a slower paced song. Not as upbeat. It's got a slow tune and melody.

"I said...hey, ay, ay, ay, ay ay......ay, ay, ay, ay......ay, ay, ay, yay....... Now...hey, ey, ey, ey...."

The hey's are exact abouts. Like, the right number of times it's sung (estimating).

Thank you, everyone, for the links and suggestions. I don't hold out hope we'll find it, though.

Sure, I'll give that a try. But that'll have to be when I get off work as well. Plus, I'm certainly no wealth of music info, so I envision the call going something like this:
IT: OK, so it's 'hey hey hey hey hey,' and then 'hey hey hey hey hey.'
BR: Shit, you got me. Sounds pretty good though.

What time do you go to bed way over there in Arizona? I can probably call you during lunch.

Yeah, I'm guessing that too, but at least someone else will know how it's sung. Also, there's the chance you may have heard it, at least, but won't know who it is. It might be the "I've heard it before/it sounds familiar" curse.

One song that matches is Southern Culture on the Skids "I Learned to Dance in Mississippi", from this album, "Dirt Track Date" (http://mp3.com/albums/453416/summary.html). Sorry. searched about, and couldn't find easy downloads of the song. If it is that song, I have a really great "rest of the story" on it.

What are the other lyrics? Any?

I don't know, are they mainstream enough to be played on the radio?

I've heard this song in question a few times when in my local drug store, playing over the speakers...and nope, I don't know any other parts or lyrics...just the chorus that goes

"I said hey hey hey hey hey hey *a bit lower pitched* hey hey hey hey hey hey *lower still* hey hey hey hey. *pause* *much lower and softer* now hey hey hey hey...."

Most of the "Hey"s are said close together so that it really sounds more like:

"I said heyeyeyeyeyey....heyayayayayay....heyayay.....now heyeyeyey......"

elelle

Kinda unlikely, but they have risen in popularity, so dunno. Other lyrics would help.

Mostly, the Hey Heys were loud, tho, so maybe not the song. you're asking about. Still, a great song.

1. Get on with it, man

Geez, I never knew so many songs had "Hey, hey, hey" in it.

That's not it, but it's the closest so far! I almost thought it was it at first...it has the same sound, tone, speed, all that. Seriously, that's a close match. It even sounds like the same voice. Only the chorus in the song I'm trying to find is sung by one person during the "hey's", not two.

It almost sounds eeriely like it, though. I even thought (before they started on the hey's) that they were leading up to make it sound like the one I'm looking for.

With how close we're getting here, you'd think one of the next ones will be it.

He should be! I'm floored here. So impressed. I didn't even have the words right, just the tune, but you were able to recognize the tune based on just the horrible warbling that I tried to pass off as singing. And even though the words didn't match up, you GOT IT SPOT ON.

Don't worry about it! Honestly, I'm happy just knowing I'm useful around here. This was my first post in a long time, actually; real life has been kicking my butt and keeping me off the boards for a few months. The tune was really what did it--the words were what threw me off when I called it up on YouTube. I was like, "Aw, man, it's not really "Hey hey hey hey hey!" But you got the sound of it right, even without the right words. My singing is just as warbly, maybe we speak the same language?

This reminds me of the time I was trying to find a song and only knew the words "Wo-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ohhhhh. Wo-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh!" It was Swingtown. :smack:

I would have totally nailed this if I had heard the clip before someone got the right answer. The thing is, the guy's slurring a bunch of words together into the "heys."

That is comforting to know, still. That the answer would have come eventually even if someone hadn't gotten it before.

I may have missed this, but could someone link the actual song? I'm intrigued. Thanks in advance.:)

Ha! That's exactly what I was thinking. For some reason I feel kind of let down.

And left far behind?

Also, the singer was singing throttling the word 'maybe', not 'hey'.

Yeah, I know that now. :smack: It had been awhile since I heard the song (enough so that I didn't remember it save for that one line (which was wrong anyway) and had to offer up a million bucks to get it again--but at least I got the tune right! : D)

So did you know that song, PeskiPiksi? :) Please tell me you did, that we I can feel better, at least, for thinking of a song you, at least, knew of.

Heh. I do know that song, but I don't think I ever would have come up with it since I was googling for "heys" or "ehs" or "ays", etc. I don't think it ever would have occurred to me to google for "mayayayabe..." :p

Creed, my own prison (http://youtube.com/results?search_query=creed+my+own+prison&search_type=&aq=f). The chorus goes "And I said heYYY YYY YYY YYY , yeahhhhhhhhh, yeahhhhhhh, yeahhhhhh" while a second singer harmonizes with a tune (not "hey"s, but actual words) that's almost exactly like what you sang in the clip above.

Edit: nevermind, you've got it!

I was going to suggest that, but it sounds more like "And I said ohhhhhhhh" than "hey."

I am totally late coming to this thread, but I know the excitement you feel right now Idle Thoughts. I had a song stuck in my head for 20 years, with no idea what it was. It was my default earworm... the one that I went back to when no other song was stuck.

Over the years my mind had warped this wordless tune into several different styles. Sometimes slow, sometimes with a rock edge, sometimes very upbeat. I didn't even know what the original tune was supposed to sound like.

One day, a few years ago, I stumbled onto it by accident online. I can't remember how exactly, but the excitement and relief I felt were beyond words. Not to mention the closure, FINALLY, after decades of torture!

Turns out the song was a recurring tune used in the background soundtrack of "The Neverending Story"....the last place I would ever have thought to look. This was my oldest sons favorite movie when he was a small child, and like most kids, he watched it 47 gazillion times. Somehow this neverending tune got etched into my brain, where it haunted me for 20 years. My mind had jazzed it up so much, it was no longer recognizable as being from this movie I was so familiar with. Once I finally identified it, it seems to have deleted itself from by brains playlist.

For anyone who gives a crap, this was not the theme song by Limahl, but some subtle mysterious string of notes heard in the song Fantasia, as sampled here:
soundtrack to NES (http://soundtrack.net/albums/database/?id=40)

Hopefully this mention of it won't bring it back. To be safe, I will now go quickly and listen to some other music, any music, and wash all thoughts of it away.

Just wanted to mention to Idle Thoughts, I feel your joy!

Glad your mystery is solved, Idle Thoughts. I knew what the song was the second I listened to your audio. Not because I'm that good but because you are. I bet you're killer at Cranium:)

This was fun. Anyone have another one?

Let me guess...is Cranium a game where you have to sing lyrics to songs and the people have to guess the song?

You know, I'm so glad we got this post resolved. For a while there, I was thinking that Bottecelli went musical.

Now here is my direct question: Does your song have only drums, save one gutiar chord that repeats early on?

Idle Thoughts, by the way, you should get that whole album by Candlebox. The album is one of the greatest rock albums of the twentieth century !

Really? I have that album, hell I saw 'em in concert a couple times and absolutely never would have guessed he was singing "Far Behind." More props to you.
