Mossimo is the "upscale" fashion brand sold at target.
Is there actually a designer of this name?
Or is it just a made-up name, for a slightly better version of the stuff sold at the store?

Don't know the answer, but a friend who was going to USC at the time (circa 1989-1990) told me a buddy in his fraternity started Mossimo as a school business project.

It was started back in 1981 by designer Mossimo Giannulli.

It was started back in 1981 by designer Mossimo Giannulli. Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mossimo) says 1986. And...
While ostensibly studying architecture and business at the University of Southern California, Mossimo Giannulli (who changed his name from "Massimo") developed an interest in the T-shirt business. He sold shirts to fraternities and sororities and in 1987 found sales so lucrative that he dropped out of school and started Mossimo. Giannulli sold his car, got a $100,000 loan, and began making his signature volleyball shorts, sweatshirts, and T-shirts. He grossed $1 million in the first year. - http://hoovers.com/free/

Thanks-I am geniunely surprised that there is a such a guy.
I figured it was an italian-sounding name, so people were thinking they were getting Versace, Armani,D&G, at cut rates.
I hear the stuff is pretty good.

Mossimo was a much higher-priced surfer-chic brand at one point. I remember in the early nineties paying quite a lot for what was basically a slightly fancy tshirt. As they expanded, they dropped prices and became a mass-market rather than a boutique brand.
The wikipedia page probably can't be trusted too much, since in one paragraph it says the company was founded in 1986, and in another, 1987.
