Who are some black rock singers?

I'm not talking about Chuck Berry-era rock, and I'm not talking about soul, funk or R&B. I'm talking about guitar-driven rock music of the type commonly associated with white singers: pop, punk, metal, psychedelic, or indie rock.

I can only think of four off the top of my head:

Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish.

Tunde Adebimpe of TV On The Radio.

Murray Lightburn of The Dears.

And of course, Jimi Hendrix.

Others?

Oh yeah, Robert Randolph and the Family Band. Heard them on the radio a few times, they're pretty good. I've heard they're amazing live.

Argent Towers, I know you're British and all, but when you start a thread asking for the names of soome Black rock singers and someone hands you an entire website full of 'em, it's usually polite to say, "Thank you."

I understand your stipulation, but I'm bemused as well. That very music was the divine source of so much of what is considered "Rock and Roll".

Thank you.

Sorry, I really do appreciate it.

But I'm not British. Why did you think I was? I write about living in the Midwest in my posts all the time.

That list seems to specialize in all-black bands, not just black singers. It also leaves out a lot of bands that have black singers.

Detroit garage rockers the Bellrays have a black woman as their lead singer, as do Seattle equivalent Thee Emergency (the brilliant Dita Vox). Both groups are otherwise white acts.

The Dirtbombs are amazing; Mick Collins has played in a bunch of other bands as well. The Gories are my favorite of his bands. I love their blend of garage punk and classic R&B. There's a list of his other bands in his allmusic bio, all of them are worth a listen.

Also, Tina Turner! When she wanted to jump-start her career in the 80s, she made a conscious decision to work with mainstream rockers like Mark Knopfler.

Since Rock is basically Blues dumbed down so we white folks can get into it, being on this list is not necessarily a Good Thing.

How do you figure? If anything, lots of rock music is far more complex in form and style than the relatively simple blues. If you're just making a joke, that's one thing, but rock has grown far beyond its blues-based beginnings, and there's so much more variety than just I-IV-V chord progressions, that you sound like one of these NPR-listening music snob/purists who think that rock is some inferior music compared to blues. (I notice this a lot among jazz listeners as well.)

Fugi, Charlie Allen of Pacific Gas & Electric, Rick James proteges Shotgun, Nona Hendryx. Parlaiment Funkadelic were arguably more rock than soul- Eddie Hazel's solo album definitely rocks.
