You use the tip of your spoon to poke out a section of cheese/bread with each spoonful of soup. That and not drinking too much wine

Never had a problem. (So what am *I* doing wrong?) Carefully poke the top layer of cheese and bread down enough to get a few spoons of soup underneath, to bring the bread down below the top of the soup bowl. Then nibble away at the top bread and cheese, then finish off the rest of the wonderful stuff.

Traditional Frenchonion soup has less crouton and cheese, and smaller onion pieces. If the bread makes a complete seal and acts as a plunger on a totally full bowl, then you are going to make a mess.

Always observe the buddy system. The buddy can perform the Heimlich maneuver while you hork up the big clot o' cheese.

Seriously, what Civil Guy and wolfman said, although I've had some absolutely wonderful French onion soup with entire rings of onion floating in it. mmmmMMMMmmmmmmm.... Now where was I? Right. Take your time and let the soup soak into the bread, and it should break up easily.
