Fallout 3 (All DLC and level cap removal)

Since my request to move this from GQ has fallen on deaf ears. I'll just recreate it here...

Here's what I want to do.

I want to go through FO3 for the third time.

This time I want to play ALL of the official DLC or Expansion packs.

And I want to play all of the above with only one modification: Remove the level cap (and do whatever else is necesary to make that work properly, such as make it possible to get past the maxed out skills and perks screens)

I think the game is good enough, for me, to not need any gimmicks or extra 'features' in the form of mods.

BUT. The nexus website doesn't seem to have a Mod that is a BASIC level cap mod. It has ones that do that and other stuff. The one I have seems mainly designed for resetting my character. And its description is a little hard to understand.

This one has some gumf about running a script whenever the level is past 20

http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=121

If it takes that much text to explain "Removes the level cap without issues" then I don't quite trust it.

This one is worse. Why would I want to reset my level and karma and stuff??

http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4387

Can't I just have a simple level cap mod that works... works with all the DLC as well?

In fact can't betheseda insist on removing the level cap in a patch of the game?

I'm afraid I can't help you with a mod but just in case you weren't aware, one of the official DLC mods pushes the level cap back to 30.

Broken Steel should be all you need. At Level 30 you are unstoppable anyway. Even the briefest amount of powergaming will give you all skills at 100 and all SPECIAL stats at 10.

I was unstoppable at level 18. But there's a feeling of satisfaction hearing those xp noises and that glorious level-up noise.

The difference is that at level 30 you can easily have all skills at 100, and there's nowhere to go from there. Unless you want all the perks, in which case you can just use the console.

But if you insist; the mod you linked to seems to be exactly what you want, Broken Steel compatible.

There's a console command you can use to remove the level cap yourself.

Seems Nexus is missing the Level 40 cap that I downloaded from there a while back.

I've not used it, but apparently the command is; "setgs iMaxCharacterLevel n"

Trouble is you get stuck at the level up screen, if all your skills are at 100 there's nowhere to dump the extra points...'cam' (close all menus) console command might get rid, but again, I haven't tested it.

There's more than just Broken Steel. I am talking about ALL the DLC.

Maybe the linked is all I need. I'm just saying the fact that they make it so complicated makes me not trust it. Why isn't there a 'removes level cap' mod that just does exactly that.

Or failing that. How DO I do it myself on the console? (And how do I use the console to get past the maxed out skills and perks screens) If I can acheive this with no 'mod' at all that would be great.

edit: I see you answered that in the thread above this one.

So if I aquire all the DLC and use the console to remove the level cap I should be good to go right?

The DLC (there are many) have extra perks... so I'd want to be able to level quite high to get all of them. I'm guessing that seven or so games can equal quite a list of perks.

Try the console command above, but probably best to try it with a 'junk' character. Use the "rewardxp n" command to level up quick and test it.

On the mod, from the author:
"Broken Steel changed the level cap to 30, so I had to put out a new version that accounted for that. That's why it's the only one with a compatibility plugin. The rest of the DLCs don't matter."

Thanks for your help.

On an unrelated note. This might seem like an obvious question, but do skills increase just by being used like they do in Oblivion? I can't recall seeing 'your sneak skill has increased' without having read a book to increase it.

Edit: Apologies for being dense I should have read the link carefully.

No problem. Edit; on second thoughts probably best to leave it to the mod if you're fairly new to the game.

Skills are different from Oblivion; you decide what skill you want to put points into at the levelling screen, as opposed to Oblivion's way of your skills deciding what attributes you put points into (SPECIAL attributes can only be increased through perks and bobble heads).

They fixed that problem in the patch a while ago.

I don't have any of the DLC, but I did run a game in which I raised the level cap to 50 (never reached it, though). The only issues I encountered are:
A) The level cap would reset each time I launched the game. It wouldn't reset my level or XP, but I'd be unable to gain anymore until I entered the console command.
B) Beyond level 20 my title reverted to Vault Dweller, which probably affected what Three Dog said about me on GNR.

I've played through The Pitt, and Operation Anchorage.

Both were surprisingly short. But good.

I liked the different atmosphere in the Pitt. Also they were right when they said "Morally grey"

SPOILER:
Do I steal a baby from it's mother? Or do I condemn the slaves to remain enslaved?

I like the cool stuff I got from Anchorage.

SPOILER:
Heavy armour which doesn't degrade. Awesome. Plus some cool weaponry

On this, my third time through the game, I've reached level 20 in very quick time. Made me get Broken Steel (for the 30 level cap) but to be honest I'll probably reach that in no time. So I'm going to be removing the cap again!

So, Anybody try Mothership Zeta yet? I am afraid to try the stupid LIVE system on the first day anymore, after the last two screwed up.

Operation Anchorage, The Pitt, Broken Steel, (which officially raises the level cap to 30,) Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta are all official Bethesda addons which cost the equivalent of $10 apiece. Each one adds a moderate amount of gameplay and story, (about 4-5 hours each), along with new perks and items.

Anything else mentioned are fan mods and may or may not be compatible with the main game.

On Preview: I just noted that this post is a two weeks old and you may or may not already be aware of all this.

Haven't played Zeta yet...

I'm gonna spoiler this just to be safe.

SPOILER:
I have to say though that the premise is quite a bit different from the other DLC, which all seemed like natural extensions of the main game, and it's caught my attention as well. The existence of aliens and UFO's have always been a part of the lore of Fallout but I'm not sure how I feel about it being expounded on in detail. If MZ follows the same structure as previous DLC there will be a significant amount of story dealing with your time aboard an alien ship, which seems quite a departure from the wasteland.

Still looking for opinions and reviews myself.

I've played and finished it. Think Raven Rock meets Operation Anchorage - IN SPACE. A bit short and the story's a bit lacking, but it's not terrible.
