Do any movie theaters still show porn?

The question is pretty much self-explanatory. Up until the late 1980s it wasn't all that uncommon to find a real movie theater, usually in a run-down part of town, that screened XXX flicks on the big screen. I grew up in a pretty rural area, and even there they had a drive-in that screened in pornos, but it closed down years ago.
Does anything like that still exist? Also has anyone here ever seen a porno in an actual theater?

The Strand Theater in Kansas City, Missouri still does. Last I was there, the main theater was showing straight porn, the smaller upstairs theater showing gay porn. I knew this, because I was there to install the video projector for the straight theater. They run regular ads in the Kansas City "alternative" paper The Pitch.

There's a second-run theater on campus that always shows a porno at the end of each school year. Not on a regular basis, though, and you might not call it a regular theater.

There are several in Philly.

BTW
Their draw, AFAIK, these days is NOT 'come see porn'. They exist as places for men to go and have anonymous sex with other men.

What about a hundred guys having a wank, elbow length apart, in a theatre???

At least you don't see them from the waist down in the car...

There used to be a drive-in in Kansas City that was right by the Fairyland amusement park that would show X-rated films as the extra-late show after the regular R rated program.

Yep, Portland has two. The Oregon Theater which was built in the 20's, and after being closed for a number of years reopened as a porno theater. Then there's the Paris Theater, which opened a few years ago. It's right next to Voodoo Donut, one of our wonderful tourist attractions.

As for your second question, yes, I have.

There's one on the edge of Center City that's been in the same location for well over 40 years to my knowledge, possibly longer. It wants to expand and start an area for live performances as well. The neighbors -- there's a Trader Joe's nearby -- are up in arms.

Did people wank at these places?

I mean, I'm sure it happened, but was it the normal thing for people who went there to do? I'd imagine not but would be interested to hear from someone who has been to one.

I'm almost afraid to ask (but I will, in the name of ScienceTM!), but are hardcore porn movies actually still being released on 35mm film for these markets, or are they using DVDs hooked up to Digital Projectors, or what? I mean, I can't imagine there's a huge market for Theatre-Screened Porn. Which, more importantly, raises another question: Why (besides cottaging) would someone want to go to a movie theatre to watch a hardcore porno film in the modern day?

Vancouver has The Fox Cinema, which screens "classic" celluloid porn films. It has been in this incarnation for more than twenty years, so there must be market for it.

Back in the eighties (before the switch to porn films) they used to screen 3D movies regularly, and I've had the 3D bug ever since then. I don't think it's a coincidence that the restaurant next door ("Sticky Fingers") went out of business when they suddenly became attached to a PornHaus.

I just mentioned this yesterday in another thread. I've watched a porno in both a walk-in theater and a drive-in theater (The Capri Drive In, Sand Springs, OK).

I haven't seen a porno movie in a theater in almost 30 years. (I'm 48, I probably last went in my early 20s)

Once, for 20 minutes, in the 80s.

What surprised me was how incredibly dark it was in the theatre. It's not like a regular theatre where there's enough light to see how many people are there or whatever. It's pitch black. So much so that when I thought I'd found an empty seat, the person sitting in it had to speak up when I tried to sit down. So as far as seeing a bunch of guys jerking off, that wasn't really going to happen. I couldn't see jack.

Also, the cocks on the screen are like 30 feet long.

Really dating myself here, but I saw "The Devil In Miss Jones" and some third-rate "Hollywood" porn flick on a double-bill at a PussyCat Theater in LA when they first came out. All I remember about either movie is that the second one featured what looked like a bicycle retro-fitted into a sex toy, and a character asking one of the females later on if he was "better than the bicycle."

I installed video projectors in the Strand and Dove theaters in Kansas City, MO back in the late 1980s because 35mm prints were getting more difficult to obtain. Back then, we used Barco CRT projectors, though we really needed more brightness.

I knew a guy whose job it was to clean the theaters after the movies. In answer to your query: yes they did.

I had a platonic guy friend, and we decided to do something 'different' and went to a theater to see a porno. It was a very bad, grainy, boring 1970's thing. I couldn't help but notice I was the only woman in the place. Right after high school my boyfriend and I went to see some super-arty foreign X-rated film, which made for a really special makeout session later! And, to conclude my tour of porn theaters, Mr. Sali and I went to see an X-rated vampire movie, of all things, before we were married. We left half way through as Mr. Sali, an old fashioned sort was embarrassed and declared "this was no movie for a lady to see".

Many moons ago I worked for a theatre chain that had closed their X-rated drive-in a few years previously. The district manager whistfuly lamented the loss of "seeing a set of tits seventy feet wide!"

I ran the projector in a wank-in-- uh, walk-in porn theater in Oklahoma some years ago. Patrons masturbated frequently right in the theater. You'd also see them head for their cars, stay for a few minutes of noticeable bouncing, and then leave.
[I also had the cliche experience of recognizing a former girlfriend in the cast of one, but that's probably a story for another thread...]
Come to think of it, I went with that girl to the Mitchell Brothers' San Francisco theater to see Behind the Green Door when it was first released. To answer your other question.

When I lived in NYC, the artist woman I lived with (roommate) had a job where she created the newspaper ads for all the porno theaters in the (then) seedy area of Times Square. She basically had a library of photos of women with big tits and would cut out a photo, create some fictitious name for the movie and list the show times. Nice, easy gig and she got paid well.
I would sometimes help her create the names for the films - was fun to do and we came up with some really witty, silly names of porn flicks. Only rule being you could not use profanity as the newspapers were very specific about what they would allow.
And no - during all those years, not a single complaint from a customer that the name of the film in the ad was not the same name as the film being shown.

Don't know if they still have them, but in Berlin there used to be lots of places that had large screen porno films in a room with tables where you could buy drinks, watch the films, get in the mood and the, uh, waitresses would offer to take you in the back rooms for an extra fee. They were advertised as "adult movie theaters".

It would drive me nuts seeing porn in a theatre. And it might make the other patrons antsy too as I keep yelling up to the projection booth to "fast-forward!" everytime talking parts came on.

No idea about the bags, but I think he got paid standard movie theater wages. He was a hard drinking skinny punk rocker who didn't really give a crap about much, and I could easily see him picking up the wadded kleenex with his bare hands.

BTW, for those who know DC, the theater was the late much lamented Biograph, which was mainly an arthouse theater showing foreign and indy films and revivals. It would show pron on weekday afternoons to help boost cashflow.

In the late 70's I was a doorman at such a place. It was sort of interesting. I'd be reading my books on ancient near eastern history and mythology with all the moaning and screaming in the background. I only went into the viewing area once - can't remember why. It was pretty gross. You had to take every step carefully since there was always the chance you would slip on a still wet deposit from a patron.

Eventually, that theater was completely renovated and is now the heart of a thriving downtown theater district. Even in it's run down condition at the time it was still a beautiful art deco style theater. Now it's absolutely gorgeous and regularly has internationally know dance troops and orchestras not to mention a variety of rock and pop music groups.

I went to One

I've always been fascinated by grindhouse and exploitation and porno films from the 70s.

Growing up i remember seeing Pussycat Theaters everywhere. I remember on one road on the way to the theme park "Knott's Berry Farm" there was a Pussycat Theater and another theater that showed porn.

Anyways I'm a screen writer and I'm writing a period piece and wanted to go into one of these theaters and see what it was like.

I drove down that same road three years ago and the Pussycat Theater is now a used car lot .And the other theater is now a McDonalda's...and they used the big marquee that used to advertise the movies with a giant M.

I did find one in LA. Called the Tomcat. Which had a history. It used to be a Pussycat Theater and a lot of porn films still "premier" there.

It was on a my bucket list so I went in. There where no showing times. Basically they play the same DVD's on a loop. And they are projected onto a screen with a DVD projector.

And nobody is sitting down watching. As soon as you walk in there you are attacked. By various really old men. The kind you imagine go home to there wives who have no clue. The kind of guys you think might be pastors, or principles, or grandfathers or truck drivers. (in other words these are not the kind of guys you would see at say a gay club or something like that...these are guys that are probably on the "DL" as Oprah would say or "undercover."

And they are all soliciting each other for sex. And having sex right in the open. I'm not homophobic. I live in LA. I've seen Brokeback mountain. I have been to gay clubs with gay friends. But I found it very creepy and "weird" (it would have been weird even if it was straight people...you just don't expect to see people having sex in public and going around grabbing each other without even saying hello) but I thought to myself "you idiot..what did you expect?" I left the room with the screen. Went upstairs. There;s a womens and men's bathroom. Very old. There's all this old Pussycat paraphanelia everywhere.

I'm glad I went. it was an experience. But I would love to ask if anyone here is old enough to have gone back before the advent of the VCR...what where these theatres like? Have people always had sex in these theatres?

It would be fascinating to know if this kind of behavior was always seen as acceptable in porn theatres?

According to my mother (to this day I'm still not quite sure how this came up in conversation) there was a period circa 1980 when it wasn't unusual for a couple to go to one of these on a date after dinner. It involved a trip "to the city" (I assume she meant NYC). She abruptly stopped, refused to give any further details, and I have no desire to ever ask her again.

Went with a girlfriend to see Deep Throat at the Pussycat in Hollywood.
Lots of couples in the audience. Every so often one of the 2 heads would disappear for a while then sit up again.
I guess those poor girls were very tired and were taking naps.

Most cities I know have peepshows now with personal viewing booths with a big box of tissues inside. The one in LA though had signs everywhere saying "no jacking off" in 3 different languages. In my city, they also have a sex shop, video section, and live show. I think the last porno theater here closed over 30 years ago.

They still have gay theaters in Korea though, with glory holes.

Where was this theater? I only ask because I was aware of a couple in Tulsa in the early 80s. Sand Springs had the Capri Drive In, which was a drive-in Porn theater. I went there a few times with girlfriend, and a bunch of beer drinking buddies (um never at the same time).

I would sometimes help her create the names for the films - was fun to do and we came up with some really witty, silly names of porn flicks. Only rule being you could not use profanity as the newspapers were very specific about what they would allow.
Our paper used to run the ads but most titles were unacceptable; they'd just say "Call for title." When I was young and naive I'd think maybe they hadn't gotten the film in before the ad deadline so they didn't know what they were going to show. Actually, in some cases I suppose that could have been true. Theatres are gone now anyway.

A friend of mine managed such a place in the 70s.

After they closed one night (like 2AM or so), a bunch of us went there for a party. It was great, we watched Deep Throat, and as a precursor to Mystery Science Theater 3000, we made a running commentary to the movie.

Pretty hysterical way to watch such stuff. We brought liquor too. Most fun I have ever had watching a movie.

The Olde Tyme Cinema, at, if memory serves, 31st and Harvard.

Yep. In the bad old days of White rule (well, up to '90 or so), all pornography was banned in South Africa (non-racehorse gambling, too). But it was legal in some of the "homelands" - specifically, Bophuthatswana, which was where Sun City was located. Sun City had an X-rated theatre. So when we visited Sun City as bright-eyed uni students far from home, of course we went to see a movie in theatre.

Tuned out to be the Traci Lords flick "It's My Body", which would probably get you done for kiddie porn in the US. Lucky us.

In college (late 80's) there was a circular building on campus that was divided into three wedges, each of which was a pie-shaped lecture hall seating about 400 people. Every so often on a Saturday night one of them would double as a porn theatre- I remember watching Caligula there with some friends (male and female). No hanky panky in the place as far as I could tell, but I'm sure there was plenty of action back at the dorms after it ended. It was weird sitting in Psyche 201 on Monday morning in the same lecture hall & remembering what was going on on the screen in the front of the room a couple nights before.

When I attended Northern Illinois University from '81-'84, a couple of times a semester they would actually show porn movies in the auditorium at the Student Center. I remember seeing Deep Throat and Insatiable there, and some other lesser-known titles, all with a group of dorm buddies. As far as I know, nobody jerked it during the movies, but as I recall everybody kind of disappeared into their rooms for a while afterward. I'm going to go ahead and take a flying guess that schools don't show porn on campus anymore.

There was also a second-run theater near campus that would have porn showing every now and then, but not as rule. I went to a couple of those, but they were always edited versions with all the actual penetration expunged.

ETA -- Got distracted and didn't see corkboard's post covering some of the same points. Yeah, it was kind of a weird situation looking back.
