Senator accuses Obama of trading in hard hat for "Hipster Fedora."

Orrin Hatch today accused Obama of abandoning the working class and donning a "Hipster fedora and a double skim latte."

Here's the story:

I wonder if he'll also grow a beard and start drinking PBR ironically.

I'd pay to see President Obama in a Hipster fedora.

There's no way a 77-year-old guy from Utah came up with that line, but it probably did come from someone unhip in his office. I don't think hipsters drink stuff you get at Starbucks.

President, I served with Jack Abramhoff, I knew Jack Abramoff, Jack Abramoff was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Abramoff.

Is that a fedora, I can never distinguish between types of hats.

I'd hope he wouldn't have to don a double-skim latte.

He can't be a hipster without a beard. If he had a beard he'd be Wyatt Cenac.

I know, actually. I'm still kicking myself for only buying a fedora there and not grabbing a Panama, too. Fedoras are too hot in the summer.

Obama was a Jeremy Lin fan before he was Jeremy Lin, so he's a basketball hipster.

Hipster fedoras are the ones with the narrow brims, right? Maybe we should take up a collection and send him a fez. Fezzes are cool.

A hat can be both a fedora and a Panama hat. "Panama" refers to the material it's made of and "fedora" refers to the shape.

Obama publicly drank a PBR on his 2008 campaign, and bloggers were debating whether that was working class or hipster of him.

The fedora favored by hipsters is the trilby.

Yeah, but he's still a Lin fan after Lin became famous, so doesn't that wipe out his hipster cred?

Is it true, by the way, as a friend of mine claims, that hipsters have by now co-opted not just trilbys, fedoras and New Eras but in fact... EVERY kind of hat in the known universe?

So that there now is NO type of hat a man could wear without having to assume that passersby will take him for a hipster?

I am pretty sure that you could get away with wearing a Tam o' Shanter without being accused of hipsterism (at least by any rational observer).

Also, those big Q-Tip hats the guards at Buckingham wear. Other than that, it's all hipster.

If the rest of your clothing makes you look like a douchebag then yes you're going to be mistaken for a hipster.

If a man in his forties (or older) is wearing a fedora with a suit do you really think he's a hipster?

Here's a man in his 40's whose wearing a fedora, who is a douchebag and yet is not a hipster.

(also, firefox's spell check should really recognize the word douchebag, its like the third most frequently used word on the internet)

Yes, a trilby is a narrow-brimmed fedora. A porkpie, unlike fedoras and trilbys, has a crown with a circular cross-section.

Thanks to everyone for the explanations. I feel informed.

But are we certain that's what Orin said? It could have been something similar and simply misunderstood because he hadn't spit out the oil executives pecker.
