View Full Version : Off shoot of the Sleestaks: Cannibal Cartoon?

04-24-2000, 09:18 AM
My sister and mother swear they remember a cartoon that was on in the mid 70s. It was about a cannibal, who had a round head that would open like Pak-Man and eat people whole. SisterRiddles blames it for all her bad qualities, and MotherRiddles claims she pulled the plug just as soon as she saw it. They were living in Manhatten at the time, and it is un-determined whether this was a New York thing or a national thing. Any takers?

Sounds vaguely like the "Pac-Man" Saturday morning cartoon, with the voice of Marty Ingells as Pac-Man. I don't recall him swallowing people, but he did have a round head and could open it very wide.

Sleestaks? Did somebody say Sleestaks? Did I miss a good Sleestak thread somewhere?

Say, as slow as those guys were, how did they ever catch anyone?

No clue on the answer to the OP.

Pac-Man does seem to be the best bet. But you can look up practically ant Saturday Morning type show over at:
yesterdayland.com (http://yesterdayland.com)

If you find it let us know.

What is this, some kind of freakout??

Is a site for sleestaks. I have no idea what you were watching though.

Remember the episode with the smart Sleestak from the "future"? (Now let's not spoil the ending for those who haven't seen it.) What a great/goofy show!

SR, was it Captain Caveman? http://yesterdayland.com/saturday/shows/synopsis/038.asp

No round head, so I maybe not, but the closest I can remember.

Just experienced the "No wait, typo" feeling after hitting reply.

That should be "...so I think maybe not..."

I remember a recurring character on the Krofft Supershow (featuring the Bay City Rollers) who would come on and swallow various guests, but this wasn't a cartoon--it was a guy in a big rubber suit, depicting some kind of perpetually hungry fat guy.

You've made me realize that I have clear memories of things that happened nearly a quarter of a century ago. Thanks for making me depressed.

Hey, I'm here for ya, buddy. I actually think Guanoland's post might be it, I just can't find a picture, or any information other than what is on IMDB. And SisterRiddles swears it was a series. The movie was called "Chew Chew Baby." I'll have to dig a bit further. Any help would be appreachiated, SisterRiddles' b-day is ::gulp:: Thursday.

By your description, the first thing that came to mind was Captain Caveman. I seem to recall he had a big mouth and would eat things.

I checked out the site - how come they don't have a picture of the Teen Angels?

Yeah, my memories of the show are pretty vague - cute girls (at least I think they were cute, but I don't remember what they looked like), short stubby caveman, yelling CAPTAIN CAAVEMAAAN!! Um, that's about it.

Sound familiar?

I don't think it's Captain Caveman, both MotherRiddles and SisterRiddles were very clear about the fact that this little guy ate PEOPLE. Whole. Eh. It's yet another mystery.

I am not familiar with this cartoon.

However, I will share a different cannibal cartoon that I saw back in the early 70s.

This cannibal was in the big city. He looked really ridiculous, too. He had a giant underslung jaw that really poked out.

Of course, the big city was a veritable smorgasbord, and he was constantly trying to eat people.

Someone was in an auto accident, and needed a transfusion.

Guess what??? The cannibal was a good donor.

As the blood was flowing from the cannibal to the recipient, the cannibal's jaw started shrinking, and the recipient's (lower) jaw started growing.

After the transfusion, the cannibal no longer had a taste for people, but the recipient did (and now looked like the cannibal).

That could be it, mjollnir! Do you remember a name at all? SisterRiddles swears the cannibal had some kind of catch-phrase, something horrific like "Meeee eat People!" or something along those lines.

Looks like we’re talking about “Chew Chew Baby” again. I’ll admit that from the OP I thought the question was about a cartoon series.

I found the following exchange on Deja:

Been going batty trying to remember the name of a cartoon I saw on TV back in the 1960s. In it, an American explorer has returned from the jungle with a tiny fellow who, he doesn't realize, is a cannibal. The cannibal starts eating all kinds of things in sight, but the explorer fails to notice. The explorer runs into an old friend named Fred, and tries to introduce him to the cannibal, who swallows him in one gulp. The explorer tells the cannibal, "I told you to greet Fred, not EAT Fred!" Suddenly, the explorer realizes the danger he's in, and the cannibal, sensing his fear, starts chasing after him. The explorer is knocked flat by a truck. An ambulance crew rushes up, seizes the cannibal and uses him as a blood donor - whereupon the explorer attains cannibalistic qualities and starts chasing the cannibal!

What's the name of this cartoon????

And the reply:

The cartoon you remember is "Chew Chew Baby" made by Paramount/ Famous/Harvey studios in 1958. It's kind of like a cross between Tex Avery's "Half Pint Pygmy" and "Crazy Mixed Up Pup". (Pretty shameless "borrowing" from the latter...) Funny cartoon, but not in a "Ha Ha" way... It's not on tape or in any TV syndication package as far as I know. Harvey would have the home video rights.
