Posted on this thread (http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comments.pl?IDLink=2313374) at Fark.com But you can just see the picture here (http://x02.xanga.com/d12b24546673140803280/b27814498.jpg) .

What is this? Is it photoshopped? Is it real? Note the warning floaters in the background. For some reason they give the photo credibility.

Or did someone just wake the Krakken? Thanks dopers!

It looks fake to me as there does not appear to be any circular motion of the water, it just goes straight down. I'll be the first to admit I'm no expert though.

It looks like an intake for a large dam. It's not Hoover dam, those intakes kave towers built around them.

It's real, or at least there are things exactly like this that are real. It's one of the several rather diverse meanings of 'glory hole'.

That is indeed a "glory hole" type spillway. That particular one is in Lake Berryessa (http://usbr.gov/mp/berryessa/facts.html) in northern California.

cool, live and learn. I'd love to see one in reallife. We're not big on dams in the UK though.

But for the sake of your eyes, don't do an unfiltered image search on 'glory hole' - two other meanings (if you didn't already know):

-A hole in a wall or partition through which a person inserts his penis, for exhibitionist purposes, or to receive sexual gratification.
-The anus

In this (http://usbr.gov/mp/berryessa/images/monticello_dam.gif) aerial photo, you can see where the spillway empties back into the river, but I have a question...

Is it just an open tube all the way down? I presume this will be the case, since installing a grille would seem to serve no useful purpose and would just trap debris, possibly causing obstruction.

So if it is an open tube all the way down, has anyone been foolhardy enough to try to ride it?

Wow! The Dope Rocks! (I should visit GQ more often!)
Now that I know what to look for, I did a google search on:
"glory hole" +dam
That got rid of all the penis pics.

Also got me to a couple of interesting links (is this kosher?)
Riding the Glory Hole on a skateboard (http://nosewheelie.com/may/feature.html) IS IT A BUST? Nope. It's been skated for decades by local skaters. I even met up with a park ranger walking in one day, and he was only interested in me to see if I was going to go fishing, and whether or not I had a fishing license. He asked me where I was going, so I told him. He just told me to be careful, and let me go on my way.
It's on the internet, so it must be true, right?

Thanks again!

Interesting .... it just so happens that my daughter spent this last summer as a park ranger at that very lake. I'll ask her if she can verify that such things would be tolerated by the PTB there.

I'm guessing that security concerns would shut that down now, if basic safety wasn't a worry.

Damn!

That looked just like the "Glory Hole" at the Bridge Creek Reservoir on Crossman Ridge.

It supplies the water where I live.

It doesn't seem that remarkable to me - they are skateboarding in the bottom part of the pipe where it's horizontal. But this little paragraph got my mind wandering:Before I moved up to San Francisco, I had asked everyone I knew where the Glory Hole was. There were tantalizing hints in the few articles I'd read about it. But nobody seemed to know for sure.

Same here. But looking at the second pic with the concrete around it soothed me. Makes it seem less freaky that it's planned.

Our staid hydraulics textbook refers to this kind of spillway as a "Morning Glory" spillway; I suppose because of the resemblance to the shape of the flower. If you will search google images for "morning glory spillway" you will get a good many nice photos.

And the definitive word about skateboarding the Monticello Dam Glory Hole ...

People try, but it's illegal and the police crack down pretty hard. I don't know which police, but I do know that they know about skateboard people and have even done stakeouts when they heard rumors of a big skateboarding things supposed to go down there. And another fact that might be of interest ... there aren't any grills or anything, but there are some large turbines at the bottom that chop things up so the creek won't get jammed up, so don't jump down it!

It might just be me, but how the heck are you supposed to skate in that thing? I literally don't understand how they're doing it.

They don't skate in that part, they skate (or try to) in the lower, horizontal part - I'm assuming when there's not thousands of gallons of water rushing through it.

It might just be me, but how the heck are you supposed to skate in that thing? I literally don't understand how they're doing it.Lake Berryessa and the Monticello Dam are only a few miles from the University of California at Davis. The Davis Wiki (http://daviswiki.org/Front_Page) page on the Morning Glory Spillway (http://daviswiki.org/Morning_Glory_Spillway) gives a good description and shows several more photos.

Basically, the concrete pipe is in the shape of a big capital "L", but the corner is curved not sharp. The vertical part drops down from the reservoir as we've seen in the earlier photos, so water that exceeds the desired level (i.e. in winter, the rainy season) passes down through the tube and bypasses the dam, exiting at the nearly-horizontal leg of the "L" (photo here (http://daviswiki.org/Morning_Glory_Spillway?action=Files&do=view&target=exit_spillway.jpg)). In the dry season, the reservoir level is below the "Glory Hole" intake level, so the entire pipe is dry, and the exit part of the pipe is then a 30ft diameter concrete playground for bikers and skateboarders. The photo here (http://daviswiki.org/Morning_Glory_Spillway?action=Files&do=view&target=edglory4bc.jpg) probably shows it best.

It seems to be very close to the shore, if the flowerstalks in the foreground of the picture, and the location of it in the Googlemap-pic supplied by Nanoda are any indication.

Seems to me that's just asking for an accident.....

Mangetout

I think it is quite close to the shore; presumably this is to facilitate maintenance; a crane would be able to drop a cable straight into it, but according to that wiki site, the land nearest to it is securely fenced off.

That's horrifyingly awesome. Apparently at least one person has died from it (http://daviswiki.org/Tragic_events/Drownings):
March 9, 1997: Emily Schwalen

Emily T. Schwalen (November 28, 1955 – March 9, 1997) of Davis drowned when she was pulled into the Glory Hole spillway at the Monticello Dam at Lake Berryessa. She held onto the edge of the hole for 20 minutes, but could not be safely approached by witnesses. (San Francisco Chronicle, March 12, 1997)

And check out some photos of what it's like to rappel down one of these (while dry, sadly);
