View Full Version : Did Enya ever cover the song "Adiemus"?

There's a song that used to be pretty well-known called "Adiemus (http://amazon.com/o/ASIN/B000TDUQTI)", by Karl Jenkins. Did Enya ever sing a version of this? I could've sworn I had a MP3 back in the day that credited her as the singer, but was that a mistake?

This is really confusing because:

A Youtube search for "Adiemus" (http://youtube.com/results?search_query=adiemus&search=Search) returns several videos that say Enya
A Google search for "Enya Adiemus" (http://google.com/search?q=enya%20adiemus) returns a ton of hits for lyrics saying that it's from her
Amazon's MP3 site lists a karaoke version (http://amazon.com/s/?url=search-alias%3Ddigital-music&field-keywords=enya%20adiemus) by a third party that's supposedly a tribute to Enya", but that album also says Adiemus is the theme song to Lord of the Rings (which it isn't; Enya sang "May It Be" for LOTR) -- thus lessening its credibility
An Amazon MP3 search for just "Adiemus" returns the related search phrase "Enya Adiemus", suggesting that enough other people thought it was hers

On the other hand:

It does not seem to appear in Enya's discographies, either official (http://discography.enya.com/index_02.html) or unofficial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enya_discography)
Amazon does not sell a version by her
The genuine Karl Jenkins version has a vocalist who sounds JUST like Enya, possibly contributing to what might simply be a popular misconception

My weak Google-fu returned ambiguous, contradictory information. Some people insist Enya never covered this song. Some people say that she did, but it's just not commonly available -- apparently, she might've done it for a Delta Airlines commercial once without officially claiming credits for it on her discography pages.

What's the straight dope?

Don't know the answer definitively but would say this is misconception. As you say the version isn't on any of her CDs (I've got em all, I should know) or on any of the Adiemus albums either.

I recall seeing it as 'Adiemus' by Adiemus on one of those collected CDs of mood music owned by a friend I've since lost track of. The only reason I even remember this (other than the fact that it sounds fantastic, of course) is that I'm very underwhelmed by bands named for their own songs... or perhaps that's vice versa, I'm not sure.

I'm sorry I can't recall the exact name of the CD. I'm sure it had 'Mood' or 'Moods' in there somewhere, but I just can't remember the full title. :( Of course, if it was one of those budget compilations, I wouldn't be entirely surprised if it was incorrectly attributed anyway!

ETA: a little quick googling gives me this CD (http://amazon.com/Pure-Moods-Vol-Various-Artists/dp/B000000WCD) which definitely isn't the one I remember (at least not in colour scheme - the one from memory has blue photographic-y sunset sky effects - very cheesy). But at least it attributes the song correctly as being by Karl Jenkins, which is something.

Seems it got misattributed during the 1997 re-release of Pure Moods, for which there were some changes to the original lineup on the collection: Adiemus is reported as being sung by....Adiemus. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pure_Moods)

So hey, maybe that IS the album I saw, but with a different cover for the Australian market?

On the second one, Miriam's official site. Go to album releases, the Adiemus I - Songs of Sanctuary. Press it. You will never find an official Enya recording. Because there isn't one. :smack:

I worked for Delta when this song was used in "our" ads, and it was always called "Adiemus by Adiemus." I even bought a copy of it from a Virgin store in England when I was visiting. I'm pretty sure if Enya had been involved it would have been ALL over the intra-company communication.
