NFL Week 16

What does it mean that Thursday Night Football is over and this week's thread hasn't been started yet. Aren't you all excited about Jacksonville vs. Tennessee?

A lot of playoff questions will be answered this week. What are you hoping to see?
1) Seattle win (of course)
2) Detroit win because I have a soft spot for them and want to see them be successful.
3) Philadelphia loss because that would clinch for the habitual non-playoff teams. Detroit and Dallas.
4) Saints lose because I want a 6-10 Atlanta in the playoffs.

FYR, here again is borschevsky's link to the charts of playoff implications over at 538.com. Curiously, they show Cleveland as having a 0.0% chance at the post-season but do not show them as eliminated.

I would like the Steelers, Bengals, and Texans to lose, but I'll be happy with just the Texans losing this week.

And the game last night had an interesting ending. I was surprised it was still on to be honest, but it was a decent end nonetheless.

That's probably because they need all of the following, if my calculations are correct:
  1. Cleveland beats\ both Carolina and Baltimore,
  2. Houston to beat Baltimore and then lose/tie to Jacksonville (!),
  3. Buffalo to lose to both Oakland (!) and New England (or tie one of them),
  4. Miami to lose/tie either to the Jets or Minnesota,
  5. Kansas City to lose to Pittsburgh,
  6. San Diego to lose to San Francisco, and
  7. KC and SD to tie (!!) week 17 in a winner-makes-the-playoffs game.
But that's better than my Titans' chances, at any rate. Go Bucs!

I scored (free*) tickets to the 49ers-Chargers game Saturday night. It might not be as good as it would be if the 49ers were still in it, and they'll probably play guys from the practice squad or off the street, but who cares. I'm moving up to Washington in a couple weeks and this is my only shot at seeing a game in the new stadium before I leave town.

I hear there was a draft order "battle" last night. Who cares what happened, what were the TV numbers like?

*: I'll be cutting a bunch of paper snowflakes for them. Fair trade?

What are your thoughts on Locker? Did you like that draft pick? Has your opinion changed at all?

I'm a Wa fan and had/have my opinions about Locker and the NFL, but curious about what you think?

This could prove to be slightly problematic. In 1983, the Seahawks defeated the LA Raiders twice during the regular season but spit up quite badly against them in the AFC championship game. If they curb-stomp Arizona Sunday evening, meeting them in the playoffs would not bode well for Seattle, as it is very difficult to beat a team thrice in one season.

Is it really the same team with a different quarterback?

Yeah, it is the same team.

But with a different quarterback.

Well, and different players on half the other positions on offense. And defense. And special teams.

But I think most of the coaching staff are the same.

When Locker came out, I liked the pick. We needed a quarterback and I thought his legs could make up for his lack of accuracy -- kinda like a Vince Young with his head screwed on straight. (Keep in mind that as a homer, I thought Young was pretty good.)

Nowadays, he's hurt too often (as Bill James says, health is a skill; Locker doesn't seem to have it) and too inaccurate. With the current CBA, there's no reason for the Titans not to move on.

Husky QBs have done quite well in pro football in Canada.

Saints at home against Atlanta should be an exciting game. NFL rivalries aren't quite as intense as college rivalries, but these teams don't like each other.

Have to admit seeing a QB run a ninety yard touchdown is impressive.

Those of you who went to bed early have missed a San Diego comeback. They've tied up the game and are going into overtime.

Actually the Chargers had to win their last four to be 9-7.

And how about those Chargers! This is written minutes after a wild comeback against the 49ers. I'm a Charger fan and I have to say that these kind of games just make me so happy. They're murder on my life expectancy but I'm happy.

(This post moved from NFL Week 15 because sometimes I don't count so good.)

He's a great athlete but I worried about the accuracy thing and it seems to have played out that way.

The injury thing is clearly a problem also. I remember the types of injuries he had in college and I couldn't quite wrap my head around whether there was some pattern or just dumb luck, looks like it's a pattern.

Well the refs just cost the Browns defense a touchdown, which is the only way we can score them. D-lineman intercepted the ball, hit the ground in the process, no one touched him. He rolls over, and handed the ball to a teammate who then ran it in. No whistle was blown all the way through the end of the return.

Then they decided that he gave himself up - which he didn't even have time to do since the ball was handed off immediately after he made the diving catch. But then why didn't they blow the whistle at any point?

Lame.

Watch out for your shoes cause the Lions are pissing away their chance just like old times. How many stupid ways can you find to hurt yourself in one game?

I can't believe the Panthers are going to play for the division next week. What a crappy division, but... Go Panthers!

The Lions won, but Soldier field will be nice and green next week from all the massive shits Detroit took on their field.

And with those morning games I believe the Chargers are now in charge of their playoff destiny 'cause the two teams chasing them have both been defeated by the Bolts in head-to-head.

I think...

I don't understand how the Saints are out of the playoffs.

If Saints win, and CAR and ATL tie the Saints have 7 wins and CAR and ATL would both only have 6 wins.

That would be a tie between Carolina (6-8-2) and New Orleans (7-9) and Carolina would win the tiebreaker with a better division record (3-2-1 vs. 3-3).

The Panthers' tie was against Cincy, so that can't be right.

A tie is worth half a win.

Carolina did tie Cincy, but the premise was that they'd tie Atlanta as well.

I was curious so I looked it up, Seattle won their division at 7-9 in 2010. They got to host a first round game and beat a 11-5 team, but lost in the 2nd round.

Only other time losing record made the playoffs was the short season of 82 when Detroit and Cleveland made it at 4-5. They both lost in the 1st round. Playoffs were different that year, they just took the top 8 in each conference.

I suppose I could fuss about the call on Jimmy Graham's "touchdown", but when your team is trying to backdoor their way into a playoff spot they really don't deserve, it just isn't worth the effort. The Saints stunk up the league this year, and in the last half of the season, they played like they just didn't care.

I think there will likely be an opening for Defensive Coordinator in New Orleans soon.....

I wonder if the Falcons manage to win the NFC South if they'll still boot Coach Smith.

I was just watching a replay of Marshawn Lynch's paltry 79-yard run, and I noticed one of the Seahawks players impeding (blocking) one of the Cardinals while they were both about 3 or 4 yards OB. Are there rules about blocking while OB?

Huh, the Browns just suspended Josh Gordon.

What a waste, his talent is tantalizing but he's too unreliable to have any expectations of.
