Posts: 3,090 - DVD lost in the mail

Not sure if this belongs in here.

Has anyone who uses Netflix had a DVD get lost in the mail, i.e. they mailed it, but you never received it?

It just happened to me and I was wondering how Netflix handles that situation. I sure as hell don't want to be responsible for a DVD I never received.

I did file a lost mail thingy at the post office today.

That happened to me twice, although in my case it was lost when I mailed it back to them. They were pretty cool about it -- at the time, anyway (they were a little smaller then). You report it lost via their website, they nag you a couple more times over e-mail to make sure you don't have it lying around the house, and then they write it off.

I'm sure that after X number of times they mark you as a repeat-offender and do something nasty with your account.

What do you suppose happens to those DVD's?

Someone in the Post Office swipes 'em?

In my case it was a copy of "Shanghai Noon" (they did mail me a replacement copy), so if anybody out there has it, please mail it back to Netflix after yer done with it!

I am a very early adopter of Netlix, and while I've only had two discs go missing in the last year, I had fifteen go missing in my first six months with them.

We got into a dispute about it (I say the discs weren't making it out of their distribution center, they say I was getting rich off them), but eventually they calmed down. Otherwise, as long as it doesn't happen to often they never even mention it.

If you go to the shipping status page in your profile there is a section for DVDs reported lost, with a link that allows you to pay for it. This apparently never goes away as they still give me the option of paying for Fahrenheit 451 which I reported lost on 5/7/00, and then reported lost again (5/21/00) when the replacement never showed up.

*Of course, I went and checked netflix, they have completely revamped their profile pages sometime in the last week. You can see lost DVDs on the Shipping Problems page.

Welcome to my world for the past three weeks.

I just moved to a new apartment, and seeing as my dad has had such good luck with netflix, decided to join.

I never received a DVD. Not once. I've declared six DVDs lost in the mail, registered a fraud complaint with the postal service, exchanged numerous emails with the customer "service" department from netflix, and told them I wanted out of their stupid service. I spoke to a nice guy on the phone who cancelled my account and didn't charge me for the missing DVDs (even though one of them was "returned"--not by me, that's for sure), then two minutes later, got an email telling me my account was cancelled because I had too many missing DVDs.

It was a weird, weird situation, and I feel completely comfortable saying that YM will definitely V. All I can think of is someone in my extremely teeny weeny apartment building was stealing my DVDs, which is not a conclusion I'm comfortable with.

FTR, my father has only once had a DVD go missing (he's been with them for about 8 months) and that has been in the past month. He's also noted significant slowdowns in their service, for what that's worth.

Hope everything works out.

I don't think I've had any go missing but I did receive several cracked ones. One disc was so bad it was actually missing a piece! Anyway, I reported them as unplayable and they sent me replacements without any hassles.

I never had a disc go missing. And they got all of my discs back without a problem. I guess I was lucky.

Right from it sez:

Q: What happens if a movie gets lost in the mail?
A: You report it as "lost" in the Your Account section, and you pay nothing.

Had one that I sent back go missing. Reported it & they sent me the next movie in my queue. No hassle.

Netflix seems to be getting faster for me. I do seem to be seeing more "Very Long Waits" than in the past.

That was the problem I had with Netflix. When I moved, I went to their website and updated my profile, but for some reason their system was knackered and wouldn't save the changes. I even emailed them about the problem to warn them not to ship any DVDs to the old address. They even acknowledged the email and promised to make the correction. So of course they send them anyway, and I never received them. I reported them lost, and they put a hold on my account because of all the DVDs that were lost at once. Now, remember that you pay monthly at Netflix so this meant that I was paying for the service and not receiving any benefits. I called them and ordered them to stop charging my credit card and reminded them that the whole thing was their fault to begin with. I cancelled my account with them after that. Fuck 'em.

So, remember that movie "Shanghai Noon" that was lost in the mail - i.e. Netflix claims to have sent it, yet I never received it?

Well, I got an email from Netflix saying that the movie had been returned!

Either someone else got it and decided to return it after they watched it, or I'm thinking Netflix never sent the damn thing in the first place!
