New Jeans. Double Belt Loops. What Gives?

So I bought a few new pairs of jeans this week after about a decade of wearing the same denims. Now I see that both pairs have "doubled" belt loops. It would be possible to wear a belt underneath both loops, or between them.

A few posers:

1) Which way am I supposed to wear my belt?

2) Regardless of 1), what is the purpose of this?

3) Is it common? When did it surface?

Let's not talk at all about the phenomenon of "button-fly".

Thank you.

It depends on the size of your belt. See # 2 below.

The purpose is to support both wide and narrow belts neatly. If you wore a thinner width belt in the larger loops, it would shift and look badly. Thus, a thinner belt goes through the inner loops, a wider belt through the outer loops and either way you look just dandy.

Who the hell looks at belt loops is a different question entirely.

Not sure how common it is but since Mrs. MeanJoe convinced me to expand my horizons beyond Levi's 550s and begin wearing what she calls Modern Man Jeans I have encountered this a few times. It is quite common in Express jeans for men.

Especially with low-rise...

Thanks MeanJoe. This is what I love about this board. A solid answer and some giggles. Excellent.
