Where can I find some huge tortillas?

I'm referring to the kind of tortillas they use at big burrito joints like Qdoba and Chipotle. I would like to make big burritos myself, but the wimpy tortillas I find at the supermarket just don't cut the queso.

I've made homemade tortillas a couple times, but I always have trouble getting the tortillas nice and thin even with the small taco-sized tortillas I make. Plus I don't have a skillet large enough to accommodate the huge tortillas I desire.

So what say you Dopers? Any sources for acquiring big tortillas or maybe a recipe or trick for how to make 'em?

Our local Trader Joe's has some giant tortillas, but we're a long way from Philly.

Really? I get my tortillas from the Trader Joe's here in Philly, but they're average size. They sure are good though!

They're in all the standard grocery stores in Seattle and Chicago, just speaking from experience.

I expect they're around, if you look about a bit.

Look for either a mercado or a restauant supply in your area. Might have to buy a large quantity, but you can always freeze them.

What do you mean by "large" tortilla? Wegmans carries a selection of 10" tortilla, their own brand and MexAmerica. I believe they're in the Pittsburg area, and like NoClueBoy says they can be frozen. (Is State College near you, or not?)

One caveat: the store brands have a one in three or four chance or not being properly seperated, so they'll adhere to each other when you try getting them out for use. Since they're about 30% cheaper I'm willing to take that risk, but you may not.

Hmm, I'm really bad at estimating measurements...

::looks at my 10" Aerobie Sprint::

I'm definately looking for something bigger than 10 inches, that's about the size of normal burrito-style tortillas I buy. If anyone has a good idea of the size they use at Qdoba or Chipotle, that's what I'm looking for. I'd guess around 12-14 inches.

I feel your pain when it comes to cheap tortillas sticking togetherr, Otaku. If I'm not buying fresh I always go for a quality brand like Mission.

NoClueBoy, can I ask what a mercado is? Wikipedia just redirects me to "mexican cuisine" so I can only assume it's a place that specializes in mexican food. In any case, your advice has reminded me of this small hispanic district in south Philly that I always notice when I go to Pat's or Geno's for cheese steaks. I'll have to check over there next time I can persuade one of my friends with a car to drive me.

I've seen them at restaurant supply stores. Maybe also a store such as Smart and Final.

I saw 15" tortillas while shopping last night. They are fairly common out here. Check the larger chain stores.

A mercado is a hispanic grocery store or grocery 'area.' Often you will find little old ladies making tortillas somewhere in the store or area. Ask them to make you some huge tortillas. If you don't know Spanish, gesturing often gets the idea across. (be nice! Don't yell, etc...) I persuaded one kindly señora to make me some Texas shaped tortillas for a party. She laughed the whole time. Even let me make some, which brought on more laughter from some of the other ladies. Good times...
