Google walking directions to Mordor.

Go to Google Maps.
Click on the get directions tab.
Enter "Rivendell" for (A) and "Mordor" for (B).
Click on the little walking person icon for walking directions.

The result amuses.

(Apologies if this has been done on SDMB before.)

(And, yes, it helps if you are really a nerd.)

? I get a start point in Costa Rica and an end point in Kentucky. What is amusing about that?

Although I do have a character logged out in Rivendell...

Use caution One does not simply walk into Mordor.

That's hilarious.

It won't give directions to get from Toshi/Tosche Station to the Death Star, though. Not even on public transportation!

That's the bit that made me grin from ear to ear.

Nice to see Google giving proper geographical advice.

Bah, it's giving me directions from some town named Rivendell in Oklahoma to Mordor Lane in my city, even if I don't give it more than "Rivendell" and "Mordor." Wonder if it's because Google knows who/where I am.

Mind you, I'm kind of surprised there's a Mordor Ln in my town. Middle of a subdivision with no other strange-looking names that I see. Mind you, it's a North Dallas suburb, one does not walk anywhere around here.

Did you make sure they were walking directions?

Until I clicked on the walking guy it didn't give me anything.

Not sure if this has been posted either but try entering Los Angeles, CA for point A and Tokyo, Japan for B. Look at step 15 (and 28)

For me, step 237 was "Kayak across the Pacific Ocean."
Steps 15 and 28 are just ordinary. What were they for you?

I would have thought more of our resident Tolkien denizens would have gotten a chuckle from the Mordor quote. Which, by the way, also works if you enter "The Shire" as point of departure.

Switching to driving directions gives you the "Kayak across the Pacific Ocean" clause at steps 15 and 28.

There's a road on my way to work called Middle Ridge Lane. The first time I passed it, I misread the sign as Middle Earth Lane.

When you're signed in to google it gives different directions. Mine started out at Rivendell Preschool and ended up here.

BTW, there's a snowflake icon on the Youtube video players right now.

So you click Play, then hit the snowflake, and it makes it snow on the video.
Kinda neat

I liked it enough to gank it and post it on Facebook, where it was immediately stolen by somebody else as well.

I'm getting directions from a Rivendell school in VA to Mordor Lane in Severn, MD. Right by Mordor Lane is Aragorn Court, Baggins Road, and Gollum Road, so I'm guessing the city planners were nerds.

And if you leave it there for a few minutes, eventually your screen gets snowed in until you hit the "Defrost" button.

Ha! Yes, and if you leave the page alone, it gradually whites out except for a little blue box that says "Defrost". Click it.

I tried this, but apparently left the "walking directions" option checked. The kayak step didn't show up until step 214, and that got me only to Hawaii. Step 237 got me to Japan. Step 239 is "239. Turn left at 県道263号線".

I hope there's room in the kayak for an Japanese-English phrase book. Can I get one in Hawaii?

Ha! I love those.
"One does not simply walk into Mordor!"
"Yes you do. You totally do."

Huh. Turns out Frodo and Sam could've gotten to Mordor in 90 minutes if they'd used public transportation. Those movies shouldn't have been nearly as long as they were.
