Opossums: Cute, or ugly?

Many people think opossums are hideously ugly. My wife is one of them. I tell her opossums are cute! She says, 'You think everything is cute! Like those enormous raccoons!' (She thinks the raccoons up here are entirely too big, compared to the ones she's used to.)

Personally, I think opossums are cute -- not to mention useful. They can eat 5,000 ticks in a season. (Not that we have a tick problem here.) They're like tick magnets, and they're fastidious in their grooming, so they eat a lot of them. And they're very, very unlikely to carry rabies. The sharp teeth and hissing? Mostly a bluff.

So how about it? Do you think opossums are cute, or ugly? 'So ugly they're cute' counts as 'cute'.

Front half, cute. Back half, ~ugly.

That gives them a net "cute" in the shunpiker household. Well, outside the household, actually.

Possums are one of the ugliest common animals out there. The only thing that outranks them in that regard are armadillos on the half-shell (southern road kill) and nutria. Even the healthy possums look like they have a fresh case of the mange. Why couldn't we get one of the cool marsupials like a koala or wallaby like Australia has? Oh well, alligators are more fun to party with than salt water crocodiles any day so it isn't a total loss.

Cute

Ugly.

That doesn't mean "not useful to nature" or "shouldn't be allowed to live", it just means "as visually appealing as a gangrenous rectum".

Ugly. Almost aggressively ugly. They always look bristly and bitey. Even the babies are only marginally cute and that's only because we're genetically disposed to find baby features cute. I can appreciate the little ones hanging onto mom as "neat" but it doesn't warm my heart.

As other said, that doesn't mean I can't appreciate them for their place in nature. We have one that hangs out in our backyard at night (not in the garbage cans either, just roams the yards) and he's welcome to do his thing. He just looks ugly while doing it.

So far into ugly that they're sort of cute.

But still, they're ugly.

Adorably cute. My dog jumped one in our yard, which promptly played dead. So I brought my dog inside and hunched over it for a while as it continued to play dead. Every minute or so, it would open and eye and look around, see me looking back, then blink it shut and give a fresh new 'death spasm' to try and fool me.

Totes adorbs!

I found one in the trash can, and laid the can over so he could get out. He would periodically raise his head and look at me. "How am I doing?"

Definitely cute.

I also think crows are pretty cool, so I'm used to being in the minority on animals.

God, so cute!
I've always been baffled by people who are so grossed out by them. Other than some people, I really can't think of any mammals I find repulsive.

Yep. A baby possum is darn cute. A big old one? not so much.

But 'coons are almost always cute.

Something about their mouth and nose is a bit ugly. The rest is fine. From a sufficient distance not to be able to really see the nose, and if their mouth is closed, then cute. Close up, mouth open, not so much.

Well sure, but that's not a fair way to judge. Anything can look ugly in certain circumstances. If Beyoncé was snarling at me like she wanted to rip my arm off, she's not going to look that good. But I'd still call her cute overall.

Me too. I give them peanuts. I haven't gotten them to get very close, but a couple will perch on the roof and even edge their way close to the low side. Beautiful birds.

Our dog brought a "dead" opossum into our house one night. We pushed it out the front door and waited. It took about 20 minutes to come back to life and walk away. It really did look dead.

Useful, maybe. Interesting, yes.

But ugly as sin. The adults are ugly, the babies are ugly, I'm betting opossums look ugly under the microscope at the fertilized egg stage.

On the bright side, they're not as bad-tempered as raccoons.

We have a pair of ravens I occasionally give meat scraps to. They recognize me, and will come down right after I drop the scraps, getting withing a couple yards of me. Darn smart birds.

An opossum killed one of my chickens, so they aren't getting any positive feedback from me on any aspect of their appearance, character, dignity, or behavior. I shoot them on sight.

Cute.

I've raised many little ones and returned 'em back to the wild... except for one who turned out to be a homing 'possum - she returned back to my patio where she built a sleeping nest in a empty half-barrel. It was filled with dried grass and lined with fresh fern fronds that got replaced by her every week or so. She also would bring scraps of garbage(newspapers, plastic wrappers and such) to fortify the nest. The most unusual things she brought back were a 20' disposable plastic painting tarp and a long strip of crime scene tape(no idea where THAT got picked up).

Having her around kept the slugs n snails cleared out of the patio garden patch. Offer up leftover fruits n veggies for your local 'possums so they'll hang around and help rid your garden of pests, a much better solution than using slug bait - it's poisonous for dogs and cats if they get into it.

I like opossums, but I'm sorry, I had to vote ugly.

Now, if you want a cute opossum you could go for the Wooly Opossum or even better Mouse Opossum.

Oh, for sure. Having trapped quite a few of both, when they are released back into the wild, possums are quick to scurry away on their three remaining feet. Raccoons wanna fight about it while still trapped. Just kidding about the feet. I use humane traps.

I didn't vote, because for me they fall somewhere in the vague "not cute but endearing in a feral sort of way" rating. One used to live in my back yard in Omaha. I would startle him (her?) sometimes when I went out in the yard at night. Then it would climb up the chain link fence enclosing the yard. If I walked up to it, it would get paralyzed there, because I was too close for comfort and it didn't want to present its vulnerable side to me as it climbed down the fence. So it would sit up there and stare at me, snot dripping from its nose. Got run over by a car after a few months.

Rodentia, as an Order of Mammals, can be pretty cute. Take the chipmunk. Or the Hamster. Some people even like squirrels. Nature was not kind to the Opossum

Opossums are the Pete Rose of Rodents.
