Krunch Kote on an Ice Cream Cone

Krunch Kote
Krunch Kote

It's a mixture of sprinkles, finely-chopped nuts and what seems to be like chopped up waffle cone.

On Tuesday after I voted in the special election, where I had worked very hard to get my city's ballot issue to pass (it did!) I treated myself to an ice cream with crunch coat.

I posted about it to Facebook and half of the people who responded said "I love that stuff, it's my jam!!" and half the people said "WTF is crunch coat?"

I had been surprised to find out the day before that crunch coat was a regional thing in Ohio (my friend's husband from Alabama had never heard of it, and the discussion had prompted me to get the cone on Tuesday). We also think it was a mainly-Dairy-Queen thing but we know for sure it's available in at least the two independent ice cream stands in the area.

Anyway, the people on FB who were confused by Crunch Coat are people I grew up with. And the people I polled later in the day also grew up here. So I don't really know how the treat passed them by.

Even my own brother says he's familiar with it but never had it. He's not the adventurous sort.

Have you ever had Krunch Kote/Crunch Coat/Twinkle Coat?

And did you know it was so....rare?

Oh yeah. The local ice cream place had it. I don't remember the spelling, but it was crunch coat.

One of my best friends worked there because her family owned it. I pitched in on occasion and learned that while I was impossibly bad at making a cone, I could crunch coat or dip ones other people had made like a CHAMP!

ETA: Gah, from SE Ohio.

I'm cheap. I don't add toppings to my ice cream. The ice cream is good enough by itself.

Before I answer the poll, I need to know which states are in the Midwest.

I see. I figure people who are from the Midwest just know/feel/assume that they are?

You don't have a spot for: From Ohio, see it everywhere, never had it.

That'd be "From Ohio ... heard of it" no?

Clevelander, and this is the first I've heard of it, but it sounds like it'd be good.

Had it growing up in southern WI, but we called it Twinkle Coat. Apparently my memory did not make that name up like I thought it might have:

I still get one every summer just for the nostalgia. So good! So hard to choose between that and "chocolate" dipped!

I'm giving you the task of finding some and trying it, then I can tell you for sure it's at the Dairy Queen in Twinsburg, Danny's in Macedonia and Rosatti's in Northfield Center. I bet you can find it at your nearest DQ.

I'm from Montreal, Canada. I've seen a coating similar to the one you describe, on local ice cream cones here, but I didn't know the name of it.

That's strange. I can get it at my local DQ.

Same here. Dipped cones, "jimmies", but nothing like the OP is describing.

I never thought to utter these words, but Ohio is obviously superior. Krunch Kote establishes this as a fact.

From Seattle and never heard of it. Mr.H is from Chicago, and when I asked if he'd heard of it, he wrinkled his forehead and said he didn't know if he had or not. Whatever that means. Sounds yummy, though!

Had it growing up in Wisconsin at most soft serve ice cream places. Usually from the now defunct Boy Blue and more recently Dairy Queen.

Googling around a bit, it appears that Dairy Queen stopped making the crunch coating some time ago but some franchisees still carry it.

I'm from NE Ohio in 80's until 93 then moved to mid Ohio and left 2001. I *think* I remember seeing it, but I don't ever remember having it or knowing what it was called...maybe...

One page leads to another... I remembered when I was a kid and my Aunt took me and my brothers to the old Dairy Queen for dipped cones. I always got chocolate and brother number 2 always got butterscotch. This Dairy Queen wasn't renovated like the one at the other end of town. We always called it the "Moo Dairy Queen" because of the sign.

Further down the page - my first real job at age 16 was at the State Theater. A big old theater with an actual balcony (and separate entrance, unfortunately).

You can't go by that! Right here on the boards we have a poster who has repeatedly insisted that where he's from in NY should be considered part of New England.

Anyway, the closest thing I've ever heard of that similar is a Nutty Buddy. You don't buy those at an ice cream stand, though. Either you buy them from the ice cream man's truck, or buy them in a supermarket, but either way it's a prepackaged ice cream novelty, not something prepared to order.

Used to see it on offer at Chicago-area Dairy Queens.
Had it once or twice.

Current Columbus resident. Pittsburgh resident in the 70's and early 80's - had it there, have it now (although it is rare). Most frequently I find the DQ version of it vs. independent ice cream shops.

Live in Central Ohio but not from here. I've taken my kids to Dairy Queen many times over the years, pass one a few times a week and there used to be one at the pool where we have a membership. Also go to Graeters, Handels and other places. Can't recall ever seeing it on a menu or anything. Maybe it's a special request thing that someone has to tell you about. The picture looks like someone poured a box of kid's cereal on top of ice cream.
